What is a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP)? 

A Highly Sensitive Person is someone who possesses the biological trait of sensory processing sensitivity. HSP’s deeply process information from their environment at the emotional, psychological and physiological level.

You may be a Highly Sensitive Person if you…

  • Experience deep emotional empathy 
  • Are easily affected by other people’s moods
  • Are sensitive to noise, smells, temperatures or other stimulation in your environment
  • Feel and think deeply about almost everything
  • Feel easily overwhelmed by expectations and having to complete multiple tasks within a specific time-frame
  • Avoid situations in which you may feel intense emotions
  • Cry “easily” and are moved by emotional stories, movies, music etc.
  • Notice subtle details and changes in your environment

Facts

    • The Highly Sensitive Person is term coined by Dr. Elaine Aron based upon over 20 years of research on sensitivity among humans
    • Dr. Aron’s research indicates that High Sensitivity is seen among 15-20% of the population and exists in over 100 species non-human animals
    • HSP’s are approximately 50% of people who present for therapy
    • High Sensitivity is equally represented among all gender identities
